The future of the European Public Sphere

OpenEUdebate / Eucopol Webinar

12/05/2020

17:00 Welcome by Jorge Tuñón

Moderator: Maria Isabel Nieto (UCM)

18.45 – 19.15 Interview with Nad’a Kovalcikova (Alliance for Securing Democracy)

Eucopol and OpenEUDebate students interview Nad´a about the current situation on disinformation and EU public spheres within the current pandemic COVID-19 period.
Moderator: María Isabel Nieto – UCM

19:15 – 20:30 Panel 2 COVID19 as a focusing event for European public opinion?

Moderator: Luis Bouza García – UAM

Most assessments of the formation of public opinions towards the EU point to the importance of national leaders and frames. Even though the crises of the 2010 contributed to increase the interest for the EU in all EU member states, they were also interpreted very differently. COVID19 is likely to hit all health systems and economies equally. This panel will discuss how public opinion towards the EU will react to this crisis: will it provide incentives for a common Europe response or on the contrary will foster disappointment.

Guest speakers: Carolina Plaza Colodro – Universidad de Salamanca; Hans Jörg Trenz – University of Copenhague; Aleksandra Sojka – UC3M

20.30 – 20.45 Concluding remarks: Luis Bouza García – UAM
